45,137 words as of Thanksgiving evening. Had I not taken time to research, I might have hit 50k already, but there were too many points of history I had to look up to keep the story going. What can I say, I write historicals–particularly westerns–and it’s not possible for me to make a note to <<<insert history here>>> and keep going.
The other obstacle I’ve encountered with this particular story is that it isn’t flowing. I have plot despair. It’s similar to a pit of despair, but without the Albino.
I write and write and only to plunge into a pit of plot quagmire. Once I hit the 50k mark, this story is going on a slow simmer shelf. It’s time is not now, but that doens’t mean I’ve given up on it. It means that another story has elbowed its way to the forefront and the characters are demanding attention. In fact, this other story has completely worked itself out in my head and it won’t take me any time at all to write. Translation: less history involved.
